Spencer,

I have the same issue. Getting ready to work on it. Here's what I know.

If you have the ETKA -look at image VA 1985 MG-1 SG-05 Illustration 6-05

The picture shows a crankshaft "O" ring - Part # N900-784-01 - behind the crankshaft pulley.

If you have FACTORY AIR CONDITIONING - there is a pulley specific to that application - and it requires the "O"ring seal. You should be able to remove the pulley without pulling the engine. It does require a special tool (which you could make) to lock the pulley so the pulley nor the crankshaft will move during removal,.(refer to the Bentley)

If you DO NOT HAVE factory AC, then a different pulley was used and it requires a very different seal type.
