An 85 should have long aluminum strips holding the top edge of the canvas to the top. Raise the top, go outside, look up at the top outside edge of the canvas. See long aluminum strips held with screws? If so, the canvas needs to be the later type. Both of the 84 tops I have replaced the canvas on were the later type.

Many changes occur during model years so there isn't any exact year. As far as the fiberglass tops go, some get damaged and have been replaced. So either type could be installed on any year. You have to look to be sure.
