dear vanagon
it has been some 9 years or so that i have been apart of this mailing list
-
in that time i have met one or two in their native habitat and a few more
on the road -
i have had conversations with many - all via email - no - some by phone -
every single person i have had either electronic or personal contact with -
without exception has been awesome in every way -
i have been given parts - advice - sold parts - sold advice - been allowed
to repair my broken stuff in yards previously unknown to me then afforded
a shower - a meal - a friend - a stand in family - been directed to a shop
where i may as well be vladimir the impaler - yet the shop keeper says -
where you doing this work at - or who sent you here - and when i mention it
was "so and so " they offer a little more than i asked for -
VW stores do not even know what a vangon is - at a Lavonion VW in oregon or
idaho (which ever it was ) the entire shop gathered round to look and see
- same thing in sausalito VW
and that is where Daryl Christensen comes in - as i read in aug 13 2010
"Leave it to Loren to have a spare pump of all things..."
and just the day before that -
"I should keep my mouth shut..Mine gets below freezing on ac, 12v or
propane..Then again, it's a Norcold from a Eurovan I shoehorned in there and

and way back in nov 29 2009 - speaking about another vanagon list member as
he played his last few dealt hands -

home and staying away from those little germy things called kids..
Same reason for Mike and family...infection will get ya back in the

all the while as life ebbs and flows one of the things is that we send
grease and parts back and forth mixed in with notes of care and concern -
sharing triumphs and joys - sadness and grief - broken down or rolling
along - all tricked out with every mod and the '83 with paint pitted by
desert sands of california and nevada - sagging seats and dirty carpets -
all the same here - all the same to Daryl -
no i did not meet him - not a single time - i read his notes to people in
trouble - i read his notes to people who simply were asking a question -
and when my own westie bit the dust (ice) in Why Owe Ming - he chimed in -
telling people that he found decent insurance for agreed value - and his
hope that if he needed to call on the iowa based firm -that they would be
as they stated -
because he was as he stated -
ya know what i mean -
we will each of us pass along from this time to the next - we will not be
able to return (so i am told )

each has its own -
soldiers have a 21 gun barrage -
first responders stand at attention and salute -
flags are folded and presented -
dirt is placed
vanagons slip quietly down the street
gears moving 1,2,3,4 and sometimes 5
syncro moving silently as all wheels engage
axles turning with assuredness of a cat's muscle
some go loudly after a life of service -
others we notice their movements by
the silence they produce
trusted- quiet- steady -
even if you do not know the vehicle you know the sort of man who makes them
run
trusted - quiet - steady -
i can hear the tick tick of the 2.1 as he proceeds into ..."the cutting
edge of old technology"
