Hello Anthony,
A few facts about the Type III or Squareback, all SB in 966 had a 1500cc
engine, and a swingaxle transmission which is basically the same engine as
the Type I except for the cooling system and a few other items heater box's,
motor mounts, etc, also the 1966 and earlier had 6 volt electrics, and dual
carburetors , In 1967 Volkswagen went to 12 volts electrics, In 1968 a 1600
cc engine, and fuel injection was added to all models, and the automatics
had independent rear suspension, while the standard transmission models
still had the swing axle rear suspension. all 1969 models had independent
rear suspensions.
In my opinion the swingaxle models were a little likely to loose control
in a sharp turn if the drive was not ready for the characteristics of the
swingaxle, the added weight of the wagon design of the rear body, and rear
engine of course. Also if not careful to keep the proper tire inflation, you
had a lot on your hands in a quick tight turn!
Dealer installed A/C was available starting in 1964. In 1966 front dish
brakes were added and I seem to remember the calipers would freeze up when
they got high miles on them.
All in all it was a good enough car, a little roomier in side that the
Type One plus it had a rear for ......junk. Quite a bit harder to work on
for the home tech. But the engine and transmission is more or less the same
as the Type One. Engine and transmission parts are readily available, body
parts no so much. The front I beam is different but the all joints are the
same I think as well as the steering damper and tie rod ends.
If you have any other questions feel free to give me a yell!
Howard

Subject: Frydae - For VW Oldtimers
It is still Frydae here on the east coast of the USA, and I am curious about
the old VW that was called the square back. It was sort of a VW station
wagon.
I had one for a very short time back in the late 70's. Too short a time to
really get to know it, as I plowed into a stopped car and totaled it on the
second day I owned it. My brain was all about a plane ticket to visit a girl
in Boston, and my foot was on the gas.
Anyway, what did VW call the engine in those cars? What was the
configuration of the engine, and what sort of fuel economy did it achieve?
It seems to me that if one of these in decent shape could be had today, it
might be a good, economical, easy to work on "around town" car for running
errands and carrying various household goods.
What do the VW old timers think?
Thanks, Anthony
