My experience in Phoenix is somewhere between the California/Deep South extremes, though it's been a while since I've looked for Vanagon parts in a wrecking yard. Usually walk in, find what I need, and either pull the parts myself or ask them to pull them for me and come back a while later.

I've always shown them the odd widgets I've taken (collateral damage?), and never been charged more than a couple bucks. Usually get a "Thanks for showing us" type of response.
