This supposed correlation of the new dynamic oil warning system with some weakness in the 2.1 ignores the fact that VW began fitting the more complex dual oil switch system to all their vehicles in roughly the same time frame. The major makeover to the electrical system beginning in 86 Vanagons was merely a convenient point in time to also add the same modernized oil warning system that many of their other cars got the year before.
