Hi Eric,
stainless steel would be completely the wrong material to use there. I'm
sure VW didn't.
stick a magnet to the stock carrier ..
you'll find it be magnetic , pretty sure ....it's galvanized or
aluminized regular metal is my guess.
Stainless steel is not 'magic metal' that some think it is ..it's too
expensive for that application anyway, a tire carier. Rolls Royce might
not use stainless in that application even,.
notice where stainless is used..like sailboat railings..
perfect application ..
where you want corrosion resistance...
light weight and loads are not large or consistent.
like hospital and kicthen tables and counters .
another great application.
it's also difficult to drill ..
tends to crack in thin gauges ..
and welds very nicely with the right equipment .
main factors are cost/strength/weight/corrosion resistence.
good for some things, and less so for other things.
there are various types of stainless too. 301L or something like that is
in the back of my mind.
Right now I can't even think of any stainless steel on a vanagon.
VRRROOOOMM ~ !
