All these sizes still leave you with limited availability for tires and the 15" sizes only offer a marginal improvement in handling. 225/60-16 or 225/55-17 are common tire sizes used on many vehicles and both are available in XL versions. Both being about an inch taller than stock also offer a slight gearing advantage. The 225/60-16 normal load index is 98 and is suitable for the vanagon. The XL version of this size is usually 102 which is preferred. For the 225/55-17 the normal load rating is 97 and the XL is usually 101. There are some XL choices in this size for under $100.
