The black sealant currently supplied in the kits works very well. For the nuts, they really should be replaced. In place of that get a good quality bottom tap and clean the threads carefully. Use a lubricant such as nickel based anti-seize on the threads and the yellow sealant on the face of the nuts only. The lubricant will reduce the twisting of the studs. For final torque use a beam or dial type torque wrench, not a clicker. Replace the valve adjusting nuts so they don’t tear up the back of the valve stems when there position is changed, (adjusted).

Ken, Thanks very much for posting this, as my Vanagon is sitting just a few feet away in my garage with the right cylinder head off and about to be reinstalled. Quick question, and I may be opening a can of worms here, but here goes: I've seen where some suggest using Right Stuff sealant rather than the black sealant that comes with the gasket kit, what are you're thoughts on that?
