In later years VW started using rust inhibiting wax on many surfaces including the engine and transmission. Most of these coating have been removed from weather, time, and folks who cleaned things too much. Most do not restore these coatings or rely on paint. The wax can attract dirt so on visible stuff like wheels tends to get removed.

What is this waxy coating? Is this just a strong car wax on top of the black paint?

This info and opinions are appreciated!
