Hey, Jonce. 

We are traveling in an 84 (Suby 2.5). 

I've got Yakima bars with a basket and a rocket box, and bikes and other gear hanging on both ends. 

With such a big profile, the extra power (which I'm assuming is similar between the conversions) disappears when it gets windy, say 25-30 and up. 
Calm is not really an issue, but 4 hard shell boats angled or stacked is an even higher profile than I'm running. 
I do know that wind works my van hard enough that I am avoiding traveling when it is blowing. 

Yakima and Malone are two that I know of that market "micro-trailers" that are pretty versatile looking, for boats and maybe a dry box. I may try one next year, or price parts to build one (friends have done so for light trailers).
