X2 on trailer. Also may consider GoWesty rear raising springs or a good set of used Syncro springs. I presume your '85 sits high in the front like the rest of that year Westfalias do. You certainly have enough power with the Zetec to haul all that and more.

From experience, I use a small 40x40 trailer built on a harbor freight trailer kit. It's nice to take the weight off the chassis - I barely notice the trailer with about 200lbs inside. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b7/misterpolak/Misc%20VW%20nuttiness/trailer-1.jpg
