You aren't alone when you make a mistake that a simple check could have prevented. I installed the 'new' ABA block onto my transmission with no pilot bearing, the first time around..I assumed the "whole deal" was plug and play...no need to do anything but bolt and unbolt...but somehow the pilot bearing got lost in the shuffle of flywheels and clutches. After a short time (one day) of running with no pilot bearing my clutch began slipping..due to a failed output shaft seal... I did avoid having to remove the whole works and just had to take the tranny out to fix the oily mess caused by my 'not checking'

I also learned (the hard way) to count and keep close track of shop rags during any major motor work. We were adding a couple of camshafts to my Porsche V8 (928) motor and had the intake and exhaust ports stuffed with shop rags to prevent any of the little shims and keepers from dropping into the combustion chambers. Somewhere during the long long tedious process of trying to time 4 camshafts and 32 valves with an almost 6' long serpentine belt driving the whole mess....we must have turned the motor over enough to suck one of those shop rags into the oil pan area....resulting weird low oil pressure issues that took the longest time to trace down. Lesson? Count the shop rags as you stuff things with them and count them again as you clean up and finish the job...
