Subject: Re: propane filler valve

Dave,

The fill valve is a oneway, spring loaded, double seal assembly. Normally, only flows inward into the tank when filling. Has nothing to do with an over pressure condition. Over pressure is managed via the main shutoff valve and its built-in over overpressure valve. Notice above, I wrote 'Normally flows'.. They do, occasionally leak outwardly.

Tapping a leaking fill valve may re-seat the seals and stop a leak. Dirt or the freezing that occurs when filling can temporarily cause a leak, once the filling is completed. The tapping seems to work as a cure sometimes. Sometimes not! BTDT

I'd take your tank's leak as a symptom. May not happen again but... I would not park the Van in a closed garage or parking area just to be safe. As the Gas Fitter advised... if it leaks again. Best to replace the Valve. Gads... that valve has served you well for 23 years... Like our Vans it is getting old!

regards

Phil Z.

Next refill will be from the people who helped me by inspecting it and reassuring me of its integrity. I tried to pay, and they wouldn't take any money, though they spent nearly an hour by the time we talked it over for a bit. The kind of place you don't find much any more. mcneely
