When I rebuild anything, or do any work on the engine in our out of the car, I make it part of my routine to lube everything before it is assembled, to smack it with a big rubber hammer (especially with bearing caps, flywheel, etc) before the bolts are tightened, and to move or rotate every item every step of the way. I start by spinning the crank in its journals, then add the rods, smacking each cap and then checking as I go. If you don't do this, and you get into the assembly and it won't turn or won't turn "right," then you have no idea where the problem is. If you wiggle and move things as you go, you can quickly isolate the problem to the last thing you tightened.
