I have had two vans recently with the same problem with the hatch power
lock. The motor back there made noise and tried but the hatch would not
unlock. I could not even unlock with the key unless I went back to the
front and put the rest of the system in the *locked* condition. Then the
rear could be opened with the key. Disassembly and lubrication seemed
called for. I found one other complication, however.
The sliding yoke shaped part that moves back and forth when pushed and
pulled by the lock motor has a little spring loaded plunger sort of on the
back side. The rounded end of this plunger drops into a detent at each end
of the travel, apparently to prevent the yoke from moving into no-man's
land due to vibration, etc. Of course this plunger and its path need to be
well lubricated. The other significant problem is the detent is shaped
strangely at one end. The little valley has an extra step or lip which
makes it more difficult for the mechanism to move out of that position.
When you try to move it back an forth with your fingers you find it hard
to move in that direction.
Some careful work with a Dremel with a small burr or stone tip can
reshape that edge, making the travel easier and the mechanism reliable once
again. HTH
