Your subsequent posts suggest that you didn't actually do this, but you
should be aware that inside these Bosch fuel pumps the fuel flows not only
through the pump portion but also through the motor, directly across the
armature and the brushes that convey current to the armature.  Any sparking
that can occur where the brushes contact the armature is of no consequence
when the pump is installed and the interior contains only fuel, with no
oxygen present.  Once the pump is removed, some gas remains within the pump
and oxygen is now present, so applying current to the pump to run it on the
bench may not be a good idea.  The result could be anything from nothing to a
small explosion, just be aware of the potential risk.
