in any case... if coolant puked or leaked out .. for whatever reason ...unless that has been thoroughly addressed.. there is still likely a problem somewhere, and heading out, loaded , on a trip ...well.

I had one vanagon ...resisted the notion it had a head gasket issue.. could drive it all over.. hours even of driving, some hills .. and yet.. as much as it seemed like 'we had it fixed' .. it just would not do this one 7 mile grade near here without really overheating.

that's when we really faced it..the heads had to come off. and after that it was finally really actuary fixed.

that was 'the only' symptom btw.. could not sustain running on a long fairly steep grade. did everything else just perfectly ..compression, heaters, etc.
