John, thanks for the nice blog posts about your trips. Good photographs.  Interesting places, especially the  Salton Sea.  Perhaps you know that at one time the Salton Sea was a thriving inland sea with vigorous populations of marine fish and both commercial and sports fishing activity.  But, pollution and salt concentration from evaporation (with no outlet) choked it down to its present condition.

So far as the natural petroleum seeps that produce the tar balls on the beach you visited:  True about the natural seeps, but the tar ball concentration is several times greater than it was naturally, due to oil production activity.  The same situation exists in the Gulf of Mexico.
