How far out does the upper arm jut from the lower? On mine it wasn't too far. Like maybe 2 -3 mm?

My guess is that you may be able to repair the part.

I can't find thesamba.com thread right now, but there's a thread showing images of repairs to the arm assembly at pivot point. It shouldn't cost too much to have a weldor weld in a piece of tube. eg in place of the copper I used shown here (an intentional attempt at an "everyman" repair. In hindsight, should have welded in new steel):
