Especially considering your climate this quest is going is going to grow to
be successful. I may have missed it but I believe you have a pop top camper.
If rear AC is of any importance at all my suggestion would be to install the
rear AC from an 87 and later camper. This should do the bulk of the job. The
front should than be the adder. Either way, you don’t just simply add a 2nd
evaporator set up. Any second unit needs its own control scheme. It is also
an added load. The compressor, condenser, expansion devices, and the
evaporators have to be match for capacity. A compressor and condenser can
only remove so much heat. AC is all about using the latent heat of
vaporization. If the compressor and condenser can’t compress refrigerant to
supply the expansion devices with liquid the system will not work. Also for
you year electrical supply will be an issue. You will probably need to
upgrade the radiator fan and add a remote condenser underneath. I've done
this. You will soon be in need of 130 amp alternator and improving the power
flow from the alternator. You need to do some homework.
With a family of 5 you will soon be looking for a passenger van to deal with
the normal day stuff. This is how Vanagon folks become multi Vanagon
families. Some will do the passenger van and a pop up trailer.

Subject: After Market A/C project - Items needed
I am planning to install the smallcar.com Vanagon A/C Kit in my 1982 Diesel
Vanagon that has a AHU motor for a 1997 Jetta TDI.
I contacted smallcar and was told that I will need some additional items.
1) compressor, mounting bracket & pulley ; I have these from TDI donor car
2) hoses & fittings - will get from local outlet
3) condenser - What one would fit?
4) dyer
I was wondering were to purchase the condenser that would be the right one
for installing in my 1982 Diesel Vanagon that has no air conditioning unit
ever installed.
On some other interests; I was planning on installing a rear a/c unit from a
grade carivan; due to it seem to be a great added unit to provided better
air in the back area due to having a middle seat in place. I myself been
handling no air for the parts 5 years in hot summers living in Mesa AZ. But
now that we have a 2 year old son and twins coming in June, wife feels this
would be a great addition for us to use my Vanagon in the summer picking up
the kids from daycare, etc. Looks like the Dodge Grande Carivan A/C unit
will fit behind/in the back side cabinet like it is installed in the
carivan. To help reduce back area from getting hot, having the windows
tinted.
Thanks in advance,
