I sewed one out of tyvek and I've used it for three years now and it's fine. If you can get a tyvek cover, they stow in a small space and do a good job of what you mentioned. Durability seems fine. I don't use it that much, but I do put it on before bad storms or really hot weeks when I'm not using the westy.
