You will not have drain back on engine shutoff in a closed loop system, much like submerging a garden hose in the pool and the lifting the center high above water. 

Yes, during oil change oil will drain via return hose with a thermostatic plate. It's no messier than a normal change. Drain crankcase first, thereby opening the closed loop, then take off filter. 

You will have to figure out how much extra oil you will need to make up for additional hose and cooler capacity. It's 1qt in my setup. 

Also, set your oil cooler fan thermostat a bit higher than your coolant thermostat.  Keep your oil/water heat exchanger for quicker oil warm up time, especially on a diesel.
