A couple of weeks ago, I was driving up to Baltimore from Charlottesville,
VA. I was on I-95 in the 2nd lane from the left side. The car in the far
left lane, about 2-3 car lengths ahead of me, hit the brakes suddenly and I
saw a puff of smoke above it. As I came around the 1st car, we saw a car go
face-first into the concrete median, the woman driving hitting the airbag,
cars all around us careening off to one side or the other, either to help
the woman or to avoid hitting her. I barely had space to get out of the
way. Being as I had my wife and 18-month-old in the car, I thought it
safest and best not to stop and was pretty shaken up for a while, but still
wonder if the woman was okay and what happened. The way people drive on
I-95, somebody probably cut her off.

Coming home, in the passing lane of Rte 29 S, south of Gainesville, I
watched a car come across the median, at a proper cross-over, mind you, and
drive sidelong into the truck in front of me.

The thing that upset me the most is how many people were driving, 65-85
mph, looking down at their cell phones. Unbelievable...

When traveling, it's not uncommon to come upon an accident that has
recently occurred, but to have one happen right in front of you is much
more rare. To have two in the same trip . . . unheard of. Further reminders
of why I hate driving in and around Washington, D.C.
