My long term budget will end up with me owning a $25k or so '85 Westy, and
that's to be expected. Our vans are worth every penny, and it's nothing
compared to the cost of a new Sprinter alternative.
If you look at what GW puts into their vans they can justify their price:
new engine, new transmissions, full suspension and undercarriage rebuilds,
big brakes, wheels, and tires, etc., and then add expensive accessories like
$1000 refrigerators, solar systems, cruise control, and more. And, of
course, they have to purchase the rigs first. They re-define the term "fully
loaded." Given how fast they sell their rigs, the demand is strong.

Nice work! I'd expect to see a van like yours for sale at Go Westy for $50k
to $60k!
Stuart-----------------------I have a lot in her, a LOT less than 50 to 60
large. I have done most of the work myself and with help from friends in our
bus club.(Shameless plug for Der Busbesitzer Gruppe).I also got a great deal
on her back in 2000, because of the coolant leak. I have been using her for
14 years and have saved money every year for this day, knowing a rebuild was
in the "near" future. I never thought I could milk the head gasket leak for
13 years ! And what can you buy that is remotely similar ? I labored over
whether or not to go with a water boxer, inline 4, or a Subie....We'll see
if my decision pans out. Since I am an old school VW'er, it was instinctive
to go with the horizontally opposed engine. Thanks for all the kind words...
