If it's the point type, check the point gap. They're bad about breaking part of the rubbing block off after sitting a while. 82 Westi with stock motor. 2.0L Air Cooled Been in storage for 3-5 years. Had no spark. Swaped points spark is good. Everything is complete and ran when stored. Started up with just set of points. Lots of Noises Valves etc. Etc. let run for 30- 40 min. Drove up the drive and back a few times, Brakes would not allow a long drive. Idle and strong power and very little smoke, ALL the noises went away. Sounded like a winner. let sit after stopping the motor to play with the sliding door that would not let go. Got the slider to work just fine. Decided to start the Vanagon just for fun to hear it purr. (really it ran absolutely Perfect) Motor would turn and acted like No Compression at all no fire just spin with the starter. Acts like No compression and spins free. No Idea. Did the lifters overcharge and the valves are just floating?? Very weird. Did not look deep. Just spun like no pistons were connected to the crank. Any one, Any one Bueller???
