Subject: speed sensor failure

Anyone know anything about speed sensor failures? I have a VW 3-wire sensor in the back of my speedo that (via a Dakota Digital box) gives (or gave) my 2.5 Subaru ECU the exact speed, and my cruise control, too. (2000 or 2001 AT ECU)

It suddenly failed. That is, it was working one day and not the next. I noticed 0MPH on my ScanGauge. I checked all the wiring, connections, etc, back to the sensor and found everything was OK. I looked for a signal from the sensor with my multimeter, using both AC and DC settings, but nothing. I think the sensor just failed. I removed it and tapped it on the countertop, and reinstalled, but nothing.

Anyone know about this? Does it happen? Is there a life of these sensors, etc?

I'm heading to Duvall on Wednesday, apparently with no speed info to the ecu and no cruise control. :-(
