Thank you to all who helped with this project, including those who sent some p-mail with very good ideas. I have ordered a USB stick that has one-channel of thermocouple input and Linux-based software as well as several thermocouples. Probably no Vanagon application, but it should be enough to get the data needed for an abstract to get me on the program for a scientific meeting.
