EGR reduces combustion temperatures. It should not reduce engine temps. The cooling system should keep engine temps in check. However, reduced combustion temps will reduce detonation, which may have killed your engine in the first place. I'm no air-cooled expert but I would say yes, fix the EGR. Or run premium fuel.

Have air cooled 1981 Camper and it over heated and destroyed engine, Suspect, was s bad thermostat. Rebuilt now, No thermostat, internal baffels in place to direct air flow- wide open (Live in Florida). The EGR was blocked off, will installing the EGR system help reduce engine tempertures? Any opinions?

Glen
