Maybe everybody knows about this, but it was news to me. I have tried about
everything you could think of, including the latest Felder Enterprises
gutter hanger that debuted last month, but I have not been happier with
anything I have used so far than this.
Here's my criteria: I want to be able to use a light that is easy to set
up, bright enough to cook a good meal by on a grill outside the westy door,
and that is handy enough to serve as a worklight or an area light or any
other thing I might want lighted around the campsite.
I have tried about five or six lanterns, including one purchased recently.
The new LED ones do OK, and some of the designs are versatile, but we at
Felder Enterprises design department believe that copying what is
essentially a kerosene lamp design in an age of LEDs is thinking way inside
the box. Consider that most lanterns on the market today mimic lighting
from the past just because, well, because. Most of the rest, like the Snake
Light, etc are just gimmicks.
This thing is a real improvement! I cooked outside by it last night by just
sticking on the outside upper b-pillar and adjusting the angle of the
"butterfly" until my grill was well-lighted. Yes, wide and flat though it
is, you can close the slider with it in place. You will probably have to
remove it to open the passenger door used like this, but I was busy cooking
and didn't experiment. You can make it sit all kinds of ways on the ground,
so it seems like a perfect worklight for mechanic work. It lights well
enough and is compact enough that it will make a great work light in my
opinion. If you do't have a car to stick it to and don't want to put it on
the ground, it has two built-in bungees with hooks so you can wrap it
around a pole or tree or suspend it from something.
To store, it magnets to the inside D-pillar above the fire extinguisher and
below the seat belt reel, always at hand from inside or outside the car. It
uses one AA battery.
