You are bringing back memories for me. Back in the '70s our son and daughter started out sleeping in a basket wedged on the front seat (daughter was 7 mos old), and they soon migrated to the cots (the '68 had a single folding cot up top and the one over the seats). Good thing about cots is they are slings, and you can't fall out without trying hard. You've got 4' of length over the seats, and more with the windows open, so it's typically the kid who will just say "no" to the front cot at some point.
That happened when my son was about 8, and then I converted the '68 to a high top with an upper bed. Then they had to sleep together, and that's a whole 'nother story!
They will probably refuse to do road trips with you around the age of 15 anyway.
Now they are in their late 30's and we do a family camping trip for 5 days in August at a state park where my daughter and son in law can sail to, and my son and daughter in law and granddaughter sleep in a tent.
None of them would every drive the Vanagon now that they are spoiled by modern cars.
Stuart

Since Aaron brought it up, what is the appropriate age/size range for kids to use the front cot? We'll be camping in two weeks with my 20-month-old son and just verified that the pack-n-play fits, just barely, in front of the bed. It's really tight, so I'm thinking it's not a long-term option for him sleeping in the van. Still, he's too young to sleep in the top and too disrupt-able to sleep in the bottom with one of us . . .
SO looking forward to taking him on his first camping trip!!
