You could check the switch in a pan of boiling water..or just get a new
switch and install it.  My fan rarely comes on when the vehicle is
moving...it does sometimes come on after I have stopped the vehicle or if I
stand still on a hot day with the motor running.   Mine is an inline VW
motor but the rest of the cooling and electrical is pure Vanagon...
