Grab the shifter gently and lift. If it has up and down play that is the first problem to address. Lift the boot and you will see where the play is.
Dennis,
From my phone.

I am looking in the Bentley 34.6. I see one set screw (M5x8) that goes into
a bushing against the shaft. Is that you are talking about, the collar
with the set screw? I just don't see how the whole thing works, how is the
side shifting happens, what stops it, which is the part.

One possibility other than the BallSocket being messed up is that it
might be simply a case that the Collar that compresses the
spring @ the bottom of the ShiftLever may have come loose in which case you
won't need that Kit but ~ you might need a SetScrew ~
I'm guessing that is what Dennis was referring to by " the spring set is not
holding it where needed " ~ Just take a look under the Boot
@ the bottom of the ShifLever & the cause should become obvious ~
