There is no need to do this if you just eliminate the cooler, which is not needed on a 1.9.  


Put it in a parts box, re-install the 1.9's nipple, and forget about it.  I'd just couple together the hoses to the cooler, but I'm not familiar with the other complexities of the 2.1 cooling system.


I'm surprised James found a filter to squeeze in that space, but I would not want to run a filter that close to the exhaust pipe.

I'm assuming they are still available - you used to be able to buy an oil filter relocation kit. The kit consists (or consisted) of a screw on adapter that replaced the oil filter, 2 high pressure hoses, 4 clamps and a fender mountable filter mount.

I have read that the Mann W917 (Volvo) and Mann W712/80 (Saab) both fit, have similar bypass valve specs and are about 1.5" shorter.
