The local CL this week had a clean-looking black '93 with new automatic and bad engine for $800. I'd have bought it if I needed another toy, but would have not had great expectations for it.  I like the EV idea and would prefer a 5-speed but believe our current Vanagon to be a more deserving recipient of my attentions.
