You're absolutely right....  that was what I would say was that only major problem outside of a new clutch that I had in 10 years /190K miles of ownership of a 1993 Eurovan Tin Top Weekender five speed    I believe it was a $1500 fix, and kind of a funky 2 part arrangement...  Yes, there was a bunch of other little thing like electric window registers, wear and tear stuff, etc......

Compare that to replacing the plugs and wires on the Mazda MPV Minivan that we bought to replace the VW in 2004, cost almost the same

With that, as noted before, for $6K if this is a 5 speed pop-top and it has no rust... I'd go for it...

The manual transmissions are much better than the autos.  The 5 cylinder engines have issues with cracked exhaust manifolds, and they are a bear to replace...

I believe your thinking of the automatic transmission...  

The manual is a tank and the 5cyl Audi engine is too.... and I believe that VW and Audi have used this same combination in many of their vehicles worldwide

Based on that description you are talking about a 1993 Eurovan Weekender.
And based on many posts by many people and the direct experience of friends of mine I wouldn't touch a '93 Eurovan with a ten foot pole.  Not at any price.  That engine and transmission combination have a very bad reputation.  Especially the transmission  YMMV.
