The coil being a coil, you have a great length of wire that, if it breaks,
makes a gap that will fluctuate a lot--or not--with temperature. It's not
like you have six inches of wire in there. When it cools, it tends to
close. When it's hot, it tends to open, but not entirely predictably in
either case. Plus, it can start when cold, bridge its own gap with spark
going down the road, but not fire when you restart.
If you had heated that coil to test it, the outcome of the test would have
probably been different.
Anytime I have or hear of the symptoms you described, the coil is the first
thing I think of.
Stuart and I are onto it because we've both owned so many British cars.
