Except for the el cheapo re-pops it is very rare for these sensors to go bad. What does fail is the connection at the connector contacts. Of course the act of changing the sensor requires disconnecting and reconnecting and that wiping action usually improves the contact enough for things to work again so we think the old sensor was bad. The other problem with this circuit is that the idle system uses the same sensor. As such a bad connection or bad ground can really make things wonky. Hot restart issues can be the first symptom.

Yes, Temp II sensor is common among VWs and inexpensive. Also a frequent failing part, so even if it isn't the cause of your current problem you are wise to have a spare available onboard.
I think you can actually take the temperature gauge sender...it's the other one that looks sort of the same but is black not blue (on my van anyhow with a Jetta motor) and you can switch the two...I could be wrong on this interchange suggestion..regardless, they're cheap. You can probably get one at a chain autoparts, even.
