I havn't followed the whole thread,
and I thought it was common knowledge that for 82 diesel vangaons you
just convert it to the 83 and later type radiator.
Heck..that's what VW did themselves with the 83 diesel vanagon.
83 and up waterboxer vaonagon radiators are quite common and not even
that expensive.
you do need the lower radiator mounting brackets..
which you usually get from any waterboxer vanagon.
and hoses ...'I think' 83 waterboxer front hoses for the smaller metal
pipes fit perfectly..
those are quite common. At my shop in southern oregon I have several of
those laying around.
the radiator fan shrould ..you need one of those from a 83 and up
waterboxer vanagon,
plus modifiy the wiring some for the fan sender in the rad ...later
type, sensibly, has only one sender not two.
really ..the 82 Vanagon is 'VW's first effort at ANY type of watercooled
vanagon';..
thus they did a lot of things 'not the best way' ..
immediatley for 83, in both gas and diesel they changed about half a
dozen things..
radiator type, heater valve location ..
and other stuff . Lots of parts for 82 diesel vanagons are 'that one
year only'..
for example..the oil filler tube system ..
they saw how hokey that was and changed it from 83 and up ..
and so on.
Even if you have a perfectly working 82 all -metal diesel vanagon
radiator ..
you want to upgrade to the later radiator.
I had one brand new 82 diesel vanagon radiator fail to remove heat very
well on long grades after only 3 or 4 yrs of use.
They just ain't that good of a radiator.
