Subject: Re: Starter Power Question

The starter is comprised of 2 main parts, a solenoid actuator and a powerful motor. The 2 parts get power from 2 very different wiring paths. The solenoid actuator coil gets power from the key switch when in start position. The motor switch part gets its power via a large cable to the battery. Since he is hearing the clicking of the actuator, we know he is getting that power from the key switch. Since the motor isn't turning one explanation is that someone left the large power cable to the battery off of the starter post.

Since the engine and tranny were just put back in that makes an overlooked battery cable at the starter post a very plausible scenario. Also, the alternator to battery power connection is through the same post on the starter. If the main battery cable is left off the starter the alternator won't have a battery connection either.

The problem I am experiencing is I have no voltage to the alternator, subsequently on to the starter. The solenoid clicks with the ignition switch, but no starter crank. Pulled starter and it benched okay. Brand new battery and as I read the wiring diagram, the red lead that goes to the alternator should be hot all the time. That is not the case. Have double checked all grounds and cannot seem to find any problem there as to the connections. Any ideas out there? >> >> >
