Diesel is more expensive than gas per gallon. Actually, right now, mid grade and diesel have been exactly the same price here for a month or so, but that's unusual. But the diesel gets much better mileage than my gas vanagons ever did, so despite the higher per-gallon costs, the diesels are cheaper to operate than the gas engines. When you're talking about new cars, I don't know how much more the higher cost of the diesel version would offset that, but I'm not talking about new cars.
