You would want to cut the gas/alcohol with some kind of lubricant like engine oil or ATF. Years ago, I had an el cheapo MB 220D that I would partially fill with filtered used engine oil/ATF. Probably not sustainable without a high quality centrifugal oil filter and micron filtration setup, but it did prove that the basic platform will technically function on pretty much any oily combustible liquid. Since VW pumps also lubricate with the fuel they run, I'd be very wary of playing around with fuel quality, unless in a pinch.
