Edward et al,

First, everyone needs to understand that, given how the price of our vans has skyrocketed of late, I've decided to get the best job done that I can, so you might consider it pricey.

1) Bodywork, de-rusting--There's a shop in Richmond, Virginia, Bug Haus, where I took the van to get the cancers removed. I have a knack for finding the artists in the world, you know, the ones whose work can't be rushed? It was there for MONTHS, but they cut out all the rust and replaced with steel where necessary and did a very good job of it. I had the typical driver's side rust below the utility connections, some seam rust, and some major dents and dings on the passenger side where the first owner got into a scrape. Total, if I remember correctly, was about $2,500. Cheap.

2) Ronnie, at Bug Haus, recommended another guy for the paint, Scott Hughes, in Bremo Bluff, Virginia. He's got his own shop where he restores classic cars and American muscle cars, but he's a VW fanatic. He wanted to do this one personally instead of handing it off to his guys. I'm okay with that. He's also changing the color, but more like 3/4 changed. We're not pulling out the engine and/or all the cabinets, but covering the exposed areas where you open the doors and such. Cost without changing color: $4,500. With color change: $5,000. This also includes fixing up some spots that Ronnie missed. Using PPG paint, if anybody is curious. Scott says it will take two weeks.

3) I'm having all the glass (except front door windows maybe) removed so I can replace all the trim, which looks horrible and leaks in places. I'm also pulling the pop-up off and replacing the canvas, which has that nice open window where there used to be a screen, with a three-window canvas. Still working on getting a price for pulling/replacing windows, but I'll let you know what I find out.
