Being a novice myself, I eventually went with the local conventional wisdom, which of course was snow shoes on all four. Breaking traction in the front while the rears continue biting normally can make for some interesting moments. Based on my limited experience, I agree that having the same grip (more or less) on both ends is beneficial. Many people around here use studs; I haven't seen any chains yet.
