Hi John.

I'm basing my choice on a few things:

- comments from builders like Darryl in a gear oil thread on thesamba Vanagon forum http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=366486&highlight=gear+oil - money (oil costs) - AA Transaxle warrantee - Redline *possibly* too thin at some temps or over a period of time. (I didn't witness any pour of Redline in old transaxle)

I'm not a transmission builder nor am I that knowledgable of them, (though I did do an input shaft swap w/o any repercussions. ha ha), so can't really comment on the suggested 20K mile oil change interval. From what I've read though, and comments from folks way more knowledgable than I, shorter change intervals are better. Besides. I'll stick to what AA suggests to keep from voiding the warrantee. After the 2 years, I'll may extend the oil change interval.

re: oil price. Redline MT90 is higher priced than the Lucas GL5 75/90 Synthetic I just bought. Besides. The girl at Lordco (local FLAPS) was too cute, so like a deer caught in headlights, I bought the stuff. ;)

There was an interesting comment in the referred to thread. IIRC, VW had said: 'no oil change required' for Vanagon transaxles. This was from a LONG time ago and I'm sure VW changed its' stance on that, but I got the impression that some owners heeded this. To what end, well.... ;)

Neil.
