I just was messing with an in-op AC compressor on my other van. There is a low pressure switch that you can jumper...probably similar on the Vanagon...dunno, my Vanagon just has windows, wind-down window that always work......Anyway, you unplug the switch, which on my other van was near the condenser (?) There must be enough refrigerant inside the system... to trigger that switch or no current is sent to the compressor. If you unplug the line to the switch and jump across the two terminals with the AC turned on, you will see your compressor engage..maybe. That tells you you may just need more refrigerant..I am told. Bet you could find it in the Bently book if you have one.
