I don't know the reasons but the US seems to be down on diesels. I've
got two Ford TD trucks that are such an improvement over the gasoline
trucks they replaced it is not even close..
.People everywhere else in the world love the diesel vehicles they are
allowed to buy...we here in the US are not given the choice on many of
these vehicles...The car companies tell us..."There's no demand"...or
"Regulations are too stringent in the US"..
I think it may be an Oil Company driven thing....They sell more gas,
'cause gas cars use more fuel..
Even in Mexico, where the state owns the Oil company (Pemex)....the
public is not allowed to buy diesel personal cars (or they weren't when I
was last there a few years ago.) Only commercial vehicles there use
diesel...and tourists. And it's certainly not "clean air standards' that
makes them prohibit private diesel vehicle sales there...
Dunno why, but Americans just have bought into diesels being smelly and
noisy and downright awful...Maybe it was those old Chevy diesel
trucks...they were pretty poor...Mention diesel to an American and they'll
probably go.."Oh those are stinky and noisy" as a newer Jetta slips
silently by....
If I could find a reasonably priced diesel inline motor to replace the
gas ABA inline in my van I would do so in a heartbeat, but they are
'desirable' now, and have been bid up in price till I can't justify the
expense of changing over...plus my gas inline works pretty well and it is
done and paid for..
And of course, when the last gas shortage and price hike came along and
there was a lot of diesels sold here because they get good mileage, the Oil
Companies soon jacked up the price of diesel to take care of THAT..
It's too bad we can't get some Subaru boxer diesels here...they would
make great Vanagon engines.
