The idle control unit in the passenger side area in front of the tail light can get exposed to moisture and dust. On my '88, the female terminals in the control unit plug have what looks like a very aggressive "bite"; they seem to be designed to make contact with the male terminal even if exposed to moisture etc. However. Cleaning those connections can't hurt. Working that connector off the unit can be a minor pita. Ensure that the female terminals in the plug stay seated when reconnecting it to the control unit. Given the nature of the "bite", the male terminal can push the female terminal out of the plug. From what I've read, the engine can run ok w/o the idle stabilization system connected.
