Way back station attendants pumping was common - any station that didn't - got no customers. So every station had attendants.

Back in the day, a prim little old lady with purple hair, sensible shoes, blouse with a neck line up to her ear lobes and frilly lace at her wrists - pulled into the local Sinclair gas station down home, in her little Nash Metropolitan and stopped beside the pump. The kid that normally pumped gas was in the bathroom, so the boss had to go out and service her car. It was hot, he was not in a good mood because the kid was supposed to do it, but he hustled. He went to her window and asked as politely as he could considering "What'll it be lady??" She smiled sweetly and replied " A Pint of gas and a thimble full of oil - and oh yes - please clean the windshield." He was bent! Growling he turned on the pump, popped open the cap and drizzled out what he figured was a pint of gasoline. Then he released the hood latch, checked the dip stick - and held up a can of oil and watched few drips come out until he guesstimated a thimble of oil. He was aggravated, it was hot, he was redfaced, and the sweat was rolling off his forehead. He snapped the hood closed, set oil can down, and proceeded to clean the windows. When done, he walked up to her window and asked:

"What else Lady? Shall I poot in your tires??"

I know, I know - but after living through today with my 15 year old carat project which I just put on the road - there just had to be some levity by days end! My to-do list is now twice as long as yesterday!
