Just did the deed and in addition to the difficulty in getting at the beast in the syncro I had an interesting experience with the replacement part. Long story here http://shufti.wordpress.com/2014/06/21/vanagon-syncro-clutch-slave-cylinder-replacement-adventure/

Short story, I had to modify pushrod to make the clutch work. The new rod and slave combo did not have enough travel to actuate the clutch.
